One of the most common questions we receive at Mindscape is: 'Should I take PTE or IELTS?' The honest answer is: it depends on your goals, your strengths, and the institution or visa you're applying for. This guide breaks down both tests to help you make an informed decision.

Test Structure

PTE Academic is a fully computer-based test taking approximately 2 hours. There's no human examiner — everything is scored by AI. IELTS, on the other hand, has a face-to-face Speaking component with a trained examiner, and is available in both paper-based and computer-based formats. The total test duration for IELTS is about 2 hours 45 minutes.

For Nepali Students: Key Differences

  • Speaking: PTE is AI-scored — no human bias. Many Nepali students find this less stressful than IELTS's face-to-face interview
  • Writing: PTE essays are shorter and more template-friendly. IELTS writing tasks require more nuanced language
  • Reading: PTE reading is integrated with other skills. IELTS reading is a standalone 60-minute section
  • Listening: Both are similar, but PTE dictation tasks are unique and require specific practice
  • Results: PTE results in 5 days vs IELTS 13 days — significant if you're on a deadline
  • Test availability: PTE can be booked almost any day; IELTS has limited test dates

Which is More Accepted?

Both PTE and IELTS are widely accepted. For Australian and New Zealand immigration, PTE Academic is fully accepted. For UK immigration (Tier 4 student visa), IELTS UKVI is often specifically required — PTE is accepted by universities but not always by UK Visas and Immigration. For Canada and USA, IELTS has broader acceptance than PTE.

💡 Tip

Our recommendation for most Nepali students targeting Australia: take PTE. For UK or Canada, IELTS is often the safer choice. When in doubt, book a free counselling session with us.
